grapefruit

Broiled Grapefruit

January 20, 2014 by sblades Leave a Comment

One of my favorite times of the year is winter!  I love the cold weather and especially love that January and February are prime-time for citrus fruit.

The grapefruit and oranges are fantastic this time of year and we try to take advantage and eat ’em while they’re great.

One of the best citrus fruits in January is grapefruit – big, juicy, sweet Texas Valley grapefruit.  They’re huge and perfect!

I prepare grapefruit three ways – plain, with a sprinkle of salt, or with a sprinkle of sugar – usually depending on how sweet or sour they are.   Now I’ve discovered another way:  broiling the halves with brown sugar.

Some recipes call for adding a little cinnamon, but the brown sugar alone is perfect.  To me, cinnamon tastes a little strange with grapefruit. This Broiled Grapefruit is quick, easy and delicious!

Total Time: 10 minutes

Sweet winter grapefruit - lightly broiled and delicious!

Ingredients

  • 2 large grapefruit, cut in half
  • 4 tbsp brown sugar

Instructions

  1. Preheat broiler.
  2. Cut the grapefruit in half and sprinkle a heaping tablespoon evenly over each half.
  3. Broil for 3 1/2 to 4 minutes until brown sugar is melted and bubbly.

Notes

Tips and Stuff:
We have an under the oven broiler, so it broils more quickly.

If yours is in the oven proper, watch the grapefruit closely to determine the broiling time.
On one of the halves I sprinkled a packet of Truvia instead of brown sugar
before broiling - it turned out well, too.
